Philosophy

Whenever you follow a discussion on ethics, political ideologies, freedom of speech, science, gene technology, global warming and questions regarding ‘what it means to live a good life’ you will find that all these topics have roots to philosophy. Even when you turn on your favorite TV-show or whenever you read a good book, you will find that many of these stories are essentially based on philosophical ideas.

Philosophy does not provide any easy answers, it is instead a subject that questions what you think you know and many times leaves you more confused than you were to being with. However, it is also a subject that encourages you to engage in discussions with others, to find common ground and explore different ideas together.

During this course, you will be introduced to different philosophical ideas throughout history as well as some of the contemporary philosophical topics. You will be introduced to ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of science, metaphysics and existentialism. You will learn to think critically, understand different viewpoints, analyze arguments and view problems in a broader context.

Art

Art asks questions and challenges both the one who experiences it as well as its creator. Art involves different crafts and techniques, but is also about experimentation, expressing yourself and communicating with the outside world. In art lessons, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in your work, a process that is both challenging and confrontational. During this course, you will get the opportunity to work with:

Drawing: Drawing is the foundation of all art courses and the easiest place to start. You will learn to see contour and how to sketch drawings with both pencils and ink. The aim is to give your drawings life, vibration and expression.

Painting: The starting point is the modern canvas painting, where we create images with brushes, scrapers and palette knives on canvas or plate. You will initially receive a few bound assignments and lectures in color theory and composition.

Sculpt: The body of the sculpture is the starting point. Learning to see the contour with pressure points of the form is important in order to maintain the firmness of the body. Experimenting with material and form in three-dimensional experiences is both challenging and engrossing. You can work with widely different materials such as granite, wood, clay, plaster or wax in both bound and free tasks.

Borders and Europe

Can we travel Europe - from the class room? The teachers, Peter and Elena, have spent the past seven years traveling Europe fra north to south, east to west through their project “Our Europe”, talking with and interviewing young Europeans.

In this class, we will be reading texts of all sorts; academic, prosaic, fiction, non-fiction, short, long - and watch films and look at works of art about Europe made by people who themselves have travelled. We will head out into the borderland of Schleswig and create our own works with the experiences and meetings we have in the area - text, sound, lyrics, video and more.

We will also be working with the participants own stories and experiences with border regions or minorities in Europe; be it through music, literature, art, food, or football

In the end we want to publish a book with drawings, lyrics, novels, photos, recipes, and other works made from our experiences - where ever they were made or what ever they are.

The class is divided in two: One part is teaching in the class room, where we will be discussing and learning about works and stories from and about Europe og explore major European themes such as identity, community, economy, borders, and a lot more. The other part is the students’ own story telling, where you will learn and get help to collect, create, and tell stories in your own way.

Music – rhytmic playing and chorus

Room for everyone and plenty of opportunity for challenge. Music speaks its own language and is a form of communication that brings together all types of people. It spreads joy and community as well as develops one creatively but also on a personal level. In this subject, we train your musical skills, whether you have been playing or singing for several years, or you are starting from scratch. The focus is on lifting your general musicality and the ability to interplay with others.

You start out by picking an instrument or vocals/chorus, and then the lectures alternates between instrumental and vocal practice in small groups and in interplay. During interplay, the focus is on the internal musical communication, to listen to each other while you make your musical contribution. Here you will experience the right balance between identity and community.  

In order to make the best performance all vocals and instruments needs to be distinguishable. We will work on confidence and sharpness in expression, and the courage to perform. With music, it’s like so much else in life: How far you reach depends on how much energy you put into it. The school’s music room is open 24 hours a day, and we provide the framework for your success, the rest is up to you!

Practical projects

In this subject, you will have the opportunity to participate and lead different parts of a practical project, as well as solving different practical tasks in collaboration with others. In this subject, the results of your work, and the work of your team, will be visible to everyone visiting the school.

The subject will consist of a combination of theory and practice in the form of planning and execution of a project. We are currently working on making a green and sustainable area east of the lake next to the school, and as part of this project, you will assist in building a shelter in this area, which can be used by you and future Minority Changemaker Programme students. The project aims to contribute to the UN’s 17 development goals, and you will be part of the first team in 2020 to work on this sustainable project. Furthermore, this subject compliments the other subject ’personal development and leadership’ well.
